Lecture: I will start by presenting some examples of the photographs I will be bringing with me – both taken in the atelier and amateur. I will show what to look for when analysing a photograph in order to (1) recognise the person, (2) find out as much information about them as possible, (3) try to date the photograph. I will show websites and social media sites where one can get help in gathering information about the photo/person.

Seminar/workshop: Then I would like to discuss, with Ingeborg Høvik's support, photographs of Norwegian women - e.g., a photo of city women, taken in an atelier, amateur, portrait and family photos, photos of Sami women in traditional dress. We will discuss the depicted women’s clothes, the circumstances under which the photo was taken, trying to date the photo, etc., paying attention to other persons visible at a photograph and to other detailed, whether important or seemingly unimportant ones.

Students may bring photos of their female ancestors, and we will analyze them together.
